"Born illegitimate and without a proper education, Leonardo felt compelled to become a famous artist in the hopes that people would finally hold him in high regard. Though Leonardo's talents were noticed, he was ultimately overshadowed by Michelangelo. Every conversation Leonardo entered eventually led to a discussion on Michelangelo's works, and a sense of inadequacy set in. Leonardo tried to overcome his resentment by putting in more effort, refusing to let the achievement of others overshadow his own. Nevertheless, Leonardo's reputation was substantial enough to get him acknowledged at prestigious elite soirées in which the rich and powerful would interact with artists and commission works of art for a generous fee. This was Leonardo's opportunity to leave his legacy by painting his magnum opus, the masterpiece he had always aspired to create."
